The short answer
Instant forms (the forms that open inside Facebook or Instagram) usually bring more leads at a lower cost, but more of them are casual. Website forms usually bring fewer leads at a higher cost, from people who have read more about you. Neither is better in general. Decide what a qualified lead is, then test both against that definition.
How they compare
| Factor | Instant form | Website form |
|---|---|---|
| Friction | Low; details often pre-filled | Higher; the visitor leaves the app |
| Information before enquiring | The ad and the form only | Your full page, proof and prices |
| Qualification | Custom questions, if added | Questions plus everything the page explains |
| Hand-off | Download, email or integration | Your normal form handling |
| Typical pattern | More volume, lower intent | Less volume, higher intent |
Form options, pre-fill behaviour and integrations change over time and differ between accounts. Check what is available in your own account rather than assuming a feature exists.
Define a qualified lead first
Before any test, write one sentence that defines a qualified lead. For example: "Inside our service area, needs a service we offer, can start within three months, and answers when we call." Every lead from either route is judged against that sentence.
A simple lead-quality scorecard
| Criterion | Points | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Business fit | 0 to 3 | Right area and service |
| Genuine need | 0 to 3 | Describes a real problem |
| Budget and timing | 0 to 2 | Within budget and timeframe |
| Contactable | 0 to 2 | Answers within two attempts |
A total of 7 or more out of 10 might count as qualified. The weights are yours to choose; the point is to apply them the same way every week.
Designing a fair test
- Use the same creative and audience for both routes.
- Ask the same qualifying questions on both forms.
- Follow up both routes at the same speed.
- Score every lead, then compare cost per qualified lead, not cost per lead.
- Wait for enough leads before deciding; a few days of data is rarely enough.
Follow-up decides the result
Social leads cool quickly. A lead answered within an hour and the same lead answered two days later can look like two different quality levels. Whatever route you choose, decide who follows up, how fast and how outcomes are logged.
What our past work shows
Our UAE campaign results include WhatsApp conversations and form leads, each shown with its original objective, dates and cost (converted from AED to pounds). A conversation or a form lead is not a sale, which is exactly why a scorecard matters. See our campaign results.
